What it is

What Are Joint Mobilization and Manipulation?

Joint mobilization uses slow, controlled, rhythmic movements to glide a stiff joint through its range. The intensity is graded to what you tolerate, from very gentle to firmer.

Manipulation is a single, quick, small-amplitude movement at the end of a joint’s available motion. Sometimes you’ll hear a “pop,” which is simply gas releasing within the joint, not a bone going back into place.

Both reduce pain, calm protective muscle guarding and improve motion. That creates a window where movement feels easier, which we immediately use with exercise so the change sticks.

How Our Hands-On Care Is Different

Hands-on treatment is most effective when it’s part of a complete plan. On its own, the relief often fades within days.

That’s why every OLO session combines manual therapy with specific exercise and education, so you leave with more motion and the strength to keep it.

A full evaluation first

We find which joints and tissues are actually driving your pain before we treat anything.

Technique matched to you

From gentle mobilization to manipulation, based on your exam, comfort and goals.

Exercise to lock it in

Every hands-on treatment is followed by movement that keeps the new range.

The first time I went to Olo it was because I was in severe neck and upper back pain. Joe was able to help me bring my pain level down substantially in just one session. I was relived and deeply appreciative. His manual manipulations and dry needling skills were perfect.

Questions

Manual Therapy FAQs

Don’t see yours? Call or text (734) 707-7285 or read our full FAQ.

Is this the same as a chiropractic adjustment?

There’s some overlap in technique, but physical therapy uses manual therapy as one part of a complete plan built around a full evaluation, exercise and education. Our goal is to get you moving well on your own, not to create a need for ongoing adjustments.

What is the “pop” sound?

It’s gas releasing from the fluid inside the joint when the joint surfaces separate slightly. It isn’t a bone moving back into place, and it isn’t required for the treatment to work.

Is neck manipulation safe?

Dr. Joe screens every patient before any hands-on neck treatment, and manipulation is never required. Gentle mobilization is often just as effective.

Does it hurt?

Most people find it comfortable or even relieving. Techniques are graded to your tolerance, and you can ask to stop at any time.

Do you take insurance?

OLO is cash-based and out-of-network, which is how every visit stays a full 60 minutes one-on-one. HSA/FSA cards are accepted, and we can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement. See our FAQ.

Let us know first if you…

Hands-on techniques are adjusted or avoided in some situations. Tell Dr. Joe if any of these apply:

  • Have osteoporosis or a recent fracture
  • Have had spinal surgery or have spinal hardware
  • Take blood thinners
  • Have inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Have dizziness, vision changes or trouble speaking with neck movement
  • Have a history of cancer

Dr. Joe screens every patient first and will always explain the options. You choose what you’re comfortable with.
