Why it keeps coming back

Stretching Your Hip Flexors for the 100th Time Isn’t the Answer

Most active adults with hip pain have tried stretching, foam rolling and rest. When the pain comes back, it’s usually because the plan never addressed why the hip was irritated in the first place.

Hip pain can come from the joint itself, the tendons around it, the low back, or how you load the hip during squats, running and daily life. Each needs a different approach, and a “tight” hip is often a weak or protective one.

We sort out the real source, calm it down, and then build strength and control through the ranges you need for your sport and your life.

What we treat

Hip Conditions We Treat

From a pinch at the bottom of a squat to rehab after hip surgery.

01

Hip Impingement (FAI)

Pinching pain in the front of the hip with deep flexion, squatting or sitting. Many people with FAI improve a great deal with targeted rehab.

02

Labral Irritation & Tears

Deep hip or groin pain, sometimes with clicking or catching. We manage load and build strength around the joint.

03

Hip Flexor Strains & Tendinopathy

Pain in the front of the hip with running, kicking or lifting your knee.

04

Hip Bursitis & Gluteal Tendinopathy

Pain on the outside of the hip, often worse lying on that side or climbing stairs.

05

Chronic Hip Pain & Stiffness

Long-standing pain or lost motion that limits training and daily life.

06

Post-Surgical Hip Rehab

Structured rehab after hip arthroscopy or other procedures, coordinated with your surgeon.

For squatters and runners

Hip Pain When You Squat or Run?

Front-of-hip pain at the bottom of a squat and hip pain on longer runs are two of the most common complaints we see from active adults in Ann Arbor.

Often the fix involves adjusting stance, depth or training volume while we build hip strength and control, not avoiding squats or running forever.

Find your pain-free range

We work in comfortable ranges and expand them as your hip adapts.

Strength where you need it

Glutes, deep hip rotators and trunk strength so the joint isn’t overloaded.

Return to full depth and distance

A progressive plan back to heavy squats and longer runs.

Your first visit

What to Expect at Your First Hip Visit

A full 60 minutes, one-on-one with Dr. Joe. Treatment usually starts the same day.

1

Your story

When it hurts, what you’ve tried, and what you want to get back to.

2

A thorough hip, back and movement exam

We test hip motion and strength, screen your low back, and watch you squat, lunge or run as needed.

3

Relief and a plan

Manual therapy or dry needling to calm things down, a few targeted exercises, and a clear roadmap.

Joe is a great physical therapist! I found his office through my gym. He is professional, experienced, and makes the sessions enjoyable. You can tell he knows what he is doing. He has exceeded my expectations, and then some. I originally came to him for a minor leg injury, which improved greatly after the first session.

Questions

Hip Pain FAQs

Don’t see yours? Call or text (734) 707-7285 or read our full FAQ.

Do I need an MRI for hip pain?

Usually not to get started. Many hip problems can be evaluated and treated based on a thorough exam. If your symptoms suggest something that needs imaging or a surgical opinion, Dr. Joe will refer you.

Can physical therapy help hip impingement or a labral tear?

Yes, conservative care is a common first-line approach, and many people improve significantly with a structured plan focused on load management, strength and movement. If you don’t progress as expected, we’ll help you connect with the right specialist.

Is dry needling safe for hip pain?

Yes. Dry needling is a safe, evidence-based technique when performed by a trained clinician, using very thin needles to address tight, irritable muscles around the hip.

Do you take insurance?

OLO is cash-based and out-of-network. HSA/FSA cards are accepted, and we can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement. See our FAQ.

When to see a physician first

Physical therapy is a great first stop for most hip pain. But some symptoms need a medical evaluation right away. Seek urgent care or call 911 if you have:

  • Can’t bear weight after a fall, especially if you’re over 60
  • Hip or groin pain with fever or feeling unwell
  • A history of cancer and new, unexplained hip pain
  • Sudden, severe hip pain with no clear cause
  • Numbness in the groin with bladder or bowel changes

Not sure? Call us. If something in your evaluation doesn’t add up, Dr. Joe will tell you and point you to the right provider.

Ready to Move Freely Again?

Tell us what’s going on. We’ll call or text to get you scheduled, or set up a free consultation if you’d like to talk it through first.
